It’s no secret that Jamaica has some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. But you might be surprised to discover that one of them is located only twenty minutes outside of Kingston. As one of Kingston Towns biggest fans, I’m not at all surprised. Kingston never ceases to amaze me, it has it all. That’s just how it rolls.
Ok, so Fort Clarence Beach has sea grape trees rather than the obligatory palms but come on, it’s only twenty minutes from the urban epicentre of K-town. Which means if you’re staying in Kingston you can nip down for a morning swim and be back home for breakfast. Who needs the north coast? Not me. Clean sands, clear waters and a beach so large I’m wondering if this is where all the washed away Jamaican beaches are secretly ending up.
Located in Hellshire, Fort Clarence beach is on the south east edge of Jamaica. Not far from the famous Hellshire Beach, it’s often overlooked for its busier and more famous neighbour. Which is a pity as this beach is better in so many ways. For a start it’s huge, it’s super clean and it’s got a friendly, local vibe going on. There’s none of the hustle (there’s a strict no-hustle policy here) of Hellshire and there’s enough dining options to ensure you can easily get your fill of fresh lobster, fish or conch.
The fish is fresh, local and tasty and for a nominal price you can have it steamed, curried or fried. Which means all you have to do is relax with a Red Stripe and enjoy the easy on the eye view. Which won’t be a problem at all.
